Several years ago, I saw a Facebook post suggesting you wrap heads of lettuce in aluminum foil to keep them fresh in the fridge for up to 30 days. While I thought the idea sounded cool, it wasn’t until recently that I decided to put this food hack to the test.
For this test, I purchased a package of 3 romaine lettuce heads on July 10. The label on the package showed they were harvested on July 1st.
I wrapped all three heads of lettuce in aluminum foil the day I purchased them. Over the subsequent weeks, I made chicken Caesar salads with two of the heads of lettuce, grabbing a leaf here and there for a burger. The third head of lettuce lasted much longer. It provided leaves for burgers and was finally finished on August 21st – a full 6 weeks after I had purchased it! (And, almost 8 weeks since it was harvested!)
Verdict: Does Wrapping Lettuce in Aluminum Foil Make it Last Longer? YES.
Yes. I’ve tried this on multiple heads of lettuce purchased across a couple of months and 100% of the time, the heads of lettuce stayed fresh in the fridge for 30 days or more. This is one food hack I will definitely continue to use.
How to Wrap Lettuce in Foil to Help it Stay Fresh in the Fridge

Fortunately, there isn’t any special skill or talent needed for this food hack. Just wrap your lettuce in aluminum foil. It doesn’t need to be super tight – you just want everything wrapped and covered.
Once the head of lettuce is wrapped, store it in the veggie bin of your fridge.
Why does wrapping lettuce in foil help it stay fresh?
There are a few reasons wrapping lettuce in foils helps it to last longer. Generally, the foil wrapping helps lock in moisture, keeps oxygen out, and helps keep a consistent temperature.
- Preventing moisture loss: Foil creates a barrier between the lettuce and the dry air in the refrigerator, helping to retain the moisture that keeps the leaves crisp.
- Blocking light: Light can accelerate the breakdown of chlorophyll, the pigment that gives lettuce its green color. Foil shields the lettuce from light, helping to maintain its freshness.
- Reducing exposure to oxygen: Oxygen can cause lettuce to brown and wilt. By creating a tight seal, foil helps to limit the amount of oxygen that can reach the lettuce.
- Protects from contamination: The foil wrapping helps protect the lettuce from potential contaminants in the refrigerator, like other foods, spills, or airborne bacteria.
The foil wrap creates an optimal storage environment that allows the lettuce to stay fresh for longer compared to unwrapped lettuce.
