I attended a free screening in exchange for my honest Wish movie review.
WISH is an animated musical-comedy from Walt Disney Animation Studios. Rated PG, it’s a family-friendly major motion picture available in Digital 3D, XD, D-Box, and Standard, only in theaters. The film is full of talent with the voices of Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk as Valentino, plus it’s directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn, and produced by Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster. Screenplay written by Jennifer Lee and Allison Moore. Original songs written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice, plus the original score composed by Dave Metzger.
WISH is set on the island kingdom of Rosas, a safe refuge for those wanting to believe in their wishes and the chance of them coming true. The ruler, Magnifico has wish ceremonies where he takes wishes for safeguarding and he makes their greatest wish come true for a select few. Asha is interviewing for the job of apprentice to the king on the same day as her grandfather’s 100th birthday. Her family hopes his greatest wish will be granted on the occasion.
During the interview, Asha is given access to the room where the wishes are kept, and she learns a startling secret about the wishes and Magnifico. There’s a dark side to him, and his intentions with the wishes aren’t what he tells the kingdom. He’s in control of everything.
Asha dares to question his motives, and the king is not happy. At the wish ceremony, not only is her grandfather’s wish not granted, Asha wonders about the security of future wishes.
Disenchanted, Asha wanders the countryside and wishes upon a star. Star comes to earth and enlists Asha to fight the evil and save the wishes. Asha is hesitant, but she realizes she is the one to lead the charge. She rallies her friends for support and to take on Magnifico.
Magnifico has a book with magic, which he uses to unleash a corrupt power, and an epic battle ensues. The community of the kingdom comes together to help fight, and the energy of all their wishes will be needed to defeat Magnifico.
WISH is a movie made with the love of 100 years of Disney. You will be surprised and awed with Disney lore sprinkled throughout. We keep it spoiler-free, but keep your eyes open to experience the magic only Disney can provide.
WISH is an homage to the history and storytelling of everything you love about Disney Classics. Music is peppered throughout to invoke the feelings of the characters and move the story forward. The movie begins and ends with narration in book form as a nod to the fairy tales we love.
WISH is a wonderful movie, perfect for kicking off the holiday season with your family. Stay till the end of the credits for a special treat. And never forget that when you wish upon a star… magic can happen! May all of your dreams come true.
Wish opens only in theaters on Nov. 22, 2023.
