VINGUYS Bamboo Smart Bird Feeder Review: Unboxing and Assembly
VINGUYS ships everything you need to set-up and install your new smart bird feeder. Along with the 2.5K video camera and the bamboo bird feeder, they include the hardware to install the bird feeder in a variety of locations, such as to a pole, wall, or tree. This is a solar-powered smart bird feeder, so the solar panel and solar panel mounting bracket are also in the box.
This bamboo smart bird feeder with camera does require some simple assembly – attaching the roof and securing the perch. VINGUYS supplies everything you need to assemble the bird feeder, including a small screwdriver. You can also use your own screwdriver or a power drill to make the assembly a bit faster.
Tip: Some of these screws are small. Make sure to assemble the bird feeder in a location where you can easily find a small screw if it gets dropped.
First, attach the roof to the top of the birdhouse. The roof has a hinge which you will install onto the back of the birdhouse using 4 of the provided small screws. Use the small pre-drilled holes as a guide.
Then, affix the perch to the front of the birdhouse. Insert the perch into the pre-drilled holes, and then screw in 2 of provided screws into the bottom of the birdhouse, making sure to install them deep enough so that they hold the perch in place. There are two small holes to help guide the placement.
Charging the Smart Bird Feeder Camera
Before installing the smart bird feeder, VINGUYS recommends you charge your camera via a USB cable for at least 5 hours. You will need to use your own USB-C cable.
After the camera has been fully charged, make sure you switch the camera ON. The TF card is stored at the top of the camera. Both the ON/OFF switch and the memory card can only be accessed while the camera is out of the feeder. Then, put the camera into the plastic holder on the bird feeder and attach the included antenna through the hole in the back of the bird feeder. Now, we’re ready to install our VINGUYS Bamboo Smart Bird Feeder!
How to Install the VINGUYS Smart Bird Feeder
VINGUYS makes it very easy to mount the bird feeder to a variety of locations. The bird feeder ships with the mounting bracket along with three different ways to mount the bracket: using the strap to mount the feeder to a tree, screws to mount it to a wall or other flat surface, or pole brackets to affix the bird feeder to a pole.
Mount the bracket where you want the bird feeder, then place the bird feeder on top. Use the included thumbscrew to attach the bird feeder to the bracket from the bottom. Pulling on the thumb ring in the middle allows you to adjust the angle of the bird feeder.
You will need a screwdriver or drill to install the solar panel. Make sure to mount the panel so that it gets as much direct sunlight as possible throughout the day. The provided power cord to connect the solar panel to the camera is a few feet long, so you have some flexibility on where you can install the panel. After the solar panel is installed, attach it to the back of the video camera.
Next, it’s time to download the app so we can start watching some birds!
Connecting to the Bird Feeder App
The Tris Home app is required to connect your smart bird feeder to your home’s WiFi and to allow you to view the footage captured by the camera. The easiest way to download the app is to scan the QR code printed in the User Guide. It is available to download on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
Once you’ve downloaded the app, open the app and follow the step-by-step instructions to connect the bird feeder to your wireless network and to connect the bird feeder to the app. After the app is connected, it will show a preview of your bird feeder. Clicking into the preview offers additional controls and settings, such as night-vision settings, adjusting recording time, and more.
Using the Bird Feeder App to Watch Birds
The bird feeder app notifies you whenever it detects a bird. (You can turn the notifications off if you prefer.) If you’ve signed up for cloud storage, you’ll also gain access to their AI-powered bird identification software, which can identify over 11,000 bird species at over 90% accuracy. In that case, the app notification will also tell you what species of bird it just recorded. Clicking the notification automatically opens the video that was just captured.
The app is also how you watch the videos stored on the memory card or cloud storage. It stores videos by day and by time. When you click on a day, the app shows a timeline that marks when all of the captured videos were taken. This not only allows you to easily navigate through the videos but also provides a glimpse at what times of day the bird feeder is most active.
Live Bird Feeder Viewing
One of my favorite features of the VINGUYS Smart Bird Feeder is the ability to watch the bird feeder live! When I’ve noticed there are multiple notifications of birds eating, I’ll switch over to live view and will have the chance to watch the birds flit to and from the bird feeder in real time. It takes bird watching to a whole new level, and I find it both fun and relaxing. You can also manually create your own video capture as you watch the Live view. The Live Recording feature allows you to take much longer videos compared to the automatic captures that are 10 or 15 seconds long. Here’s several minutes of a Dark-eyed Junco that stopped by for a bit of bird seed.
Automatic Smart Bird Feeder Videos
Since installing the VINGUYS Bamboo Smart Bird Feeder, we’ve captured footage of several different bird species stopping by:
White-Breasted Nuthatch (with Bird Call – SOUND ON!)
Mountain Chickadee
House Finch
I’ve put together a playlist of more wild bird videos we filmed at our feeder.
VINGUYS Bamboo Smart Bird Feeder Review
Since installing the VINGUYS Bamboo Smart Bird Feeder almost 2 weeks ago, I can honestly say it has transformed my bird watching experience. I love getting such a close-up view of the different birds that frequent our feeders. The high-quality video and AI make it very easy to identify the various bird species.
The image and video quality of the captured videos impressed me. The 2.5K resolution camera automatically keeps the birds that are visiting the feeder in focus for an incredibly clear, very close-up view of the birds feeding. The fact that the camera is solar-powered meant we weren’t limited to electrical outlets and gave us a lot of options for where we could install the bird feeder. And, even during cloudy days, the camera stays powered up and records bird feedings without issue.
The AI bird identification is a lot of fun. It did help me identify the several wild bird species that frequented the smart bird feeder. It would be nice if you could “correct” the AI since I noticed it seemed to confuse a Mountain Chickadee with the similarly looking Red-Breasted Nuthatch. Cloud Storage and the AI bird identification are paid add-ons you can purchase, but they aren’t needed to use the bird feeder.
I was surprised to learn that this smart bird feeder also records sound! It was very cool being able to hear the birds chirping and using the videos to identify the calls of the different species.
Overall, I think solar-powered bird feeder is great for bird watching. I recommend the VINGUYS Bamboo Smart Bird Feeder to anyone who wants an up-close and personal view of the wild birds that frequent their yard.
