THE BAXTERS is a faith-based television family drama series based on the bestselling Redemption books by Karen Kingsbury. The show revolves around the Baxter family, led by parents John and Elizabeth Baxter and their five adult children, Emily, Kari, Ashley, Erin, and Luke. It stars Roma Downey, Ted McGinley, Ali Cobrin, Masey McClain, Reilly Anspaugh, Emily Peterson, John Plasse, Cassidy Gifford, and more. It’s rated for ages 13+.
THE BAXTERS dropped three seasons at once, and I received the complete Season 1 for review. The first episode opens on Mother’s Day, with all of her children presenting Elizabeth interrelated gifts. A great introduction to the family and cast of characters. They are a close-knit family with a strong foundation in their Christian faith, which grounds and guides them throughout the series.
The show plays like any family drama and doesn’t shy away from hard subjects which impact their family, including alcoholism, marital problems, lost faith, betrayal, and post-trauma from an event in the past. There are side characters dealing with unrequited love, substance abuse, and more. The difference is the Baxter family relies on their faith in the bad times and good, and they try to surround themselves with others in faith.
Set in the Midwest, each episode begins with a Bible verse which sets the tone for what follows. We learn more about each character and the role they play in the family and what they do in life. Each character has wonderful qualities, but they have flaws or trials, too. The sibling dynamic is strong, and while they are supportive, there is some normal rivalry or resentments.
Some of the characters have secrets which are slowly revealed, and the impact for those is hard, and for others there is revelation. The struggles are realistic, and the audience is immersed with what’s happening in the family and wants what’s best for them.
The family keeps church a central part of their lives, but they live ordinary lives and show that with faith and love, nothing is impossible, if you believe. The parents provide guidance and the family prays together for strength, or individually, and as part of their everyday lives.
With Roma Downey and Ted McGinley leading the cast, the acting is strong and the show is comparable quality to other family dramas on television. The set is beautiful and fits with the characters’ lives.
As the season goes along, there are some striking moments with love, loss, crisis of faith, and even an off-camera moment of violence. The show is presented in a gentler way, but it still tackles the reality of life’s challenges while remaining an enjoyable show.
Whether you watch one episode at a time or binge the entire series, you will find yourself hooked on what’s happening in the life of THE BAXTERS. Each episode leaves you wanting more, and the following episode delivers.
THE BAXTERS is a welcome new addition to television family drama market with satisfying storylines, strong character arcs, and engaging plots.
