MY SPY THE ETERNAL CITY is a spy action-comedy major motion picture from Amazon MGM Studios, STXfilms, and Madison Wells Studios, and it’s available for streaming on Prime Video. Rated PG-13, it’s the sequel to the 2020 movie, MY SPY. Stars include Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Ken Jeong, Anna Faris, Kristen Schaal, Flula Borg, Taeho K, Craig Robinson, and more.
My Spy The Eternal City begins with an action-packed dream sequence which sets the tone for the movie. Following JJ and Sophie five years in the future from the original movie, JJ has a desk job with the CIA while Sophie is a high school student. JJ is running the house while Sophie’s mom is temporarily out of the country for work, and Sophie is still training with JJ, but as an awkward teen trying to find her place—and a date to the homecoming dance—she is embarrassed by him.
Sophie’s school choir wins a spot to perform in Italy, and she allows JJ to chaperone. Sophie’s best friend Collin is JJ’s boss’s son, but Collin is unaware because his dad has kept his job a secret. As they’re traveling through different cities in Italy, Collin is kidnapped to blackmail his father into giving up top secret information related to post-war nuclear weapons hidden throughout the world.
JJ, Chloe, and Dave have to find Collin before it’s too late. The chase is on, and they have comedic antics with crazy birds before going undercover at Aviano Air Force Base, then dodging bullets throughout the Italian countryside, and all the way to Rome and the Vatican. The CIA thinks they’ve gone rogue, and they learn someone unexpected is secret enemy agent.
Time is not on their side as they have to find a bomb and prevent its detonation. With obstacles to overcome, foes from the past, and convincing their colleagues they’re not the enemy, the race is on. Missing the performance with the high school choir is the last thing on Sophie’s mind as she and JJ work together to find Collin and stop the Weapon of Mass Destruction. The clock is ticking.
The movie is fast-paced with never-ending comedy and exploits throughout the film. The soundtrack pairs nicely with the scenes and enhances the viewing pleasure. While a family-friendly movie, because of the mild violence, sophomoric stunts, and some coarse language, it would be better suited for older adolescents and teens.
There are fun comedy scenes during the credits, so don’t exit the movie before watching them all.
My Spy The Eternal City is an entertaining movie which transports you on a summer tour of Italy while evading the enemy, giving all the adventure of a spy movie with a bit of danger and lots of laughs.
