IRENA’S VOW is an award-winning dramatic film set during WWII in Poland. Based on the true story of Irena Gut Opdyke, it follows her courageous acts to save lives during WWII and the Holocaust. The movie stars Sophie Nélisse, Dougray Scott, Andrzej Seweryn, and Maciej Nawrocki. It was written by Dan Gordon and directed by Louise Archambault. Released through Quiver Distribution, it will have a limited release.
Irena was working in a hospital, training to be a nurse, at the time of the invasion of the Germans. Her home had been taken over, with no sign of her family. As she was in church, those there were forced out, rounded up, and forced into labor for the Germans. Irena was first working in a factory, but then moved to an area of food service, and eventually in a position where she was also managing laundry and tailoring. In charge of laborers who were Polish Jews, she found her honesty with them would gain their respect.
Another trusted worker, a fatherly man named Schultz, acted as a guide to Irena, advising her to never let on if she heard something or saw something as a means of survival.
While going to the market to get food for the dining hall, Irena witnesses unspeakable acts against the Polish Jews. Irena vows then to saves lives if she is able.
A German officer asks her to be his personal housekeeper at a villa where he will be living outside of town. Big changes are coming, and Irena sees this as an opportunity to help the Polish Jews she had been managing–they had developed a relationship with mutual trust. She arranged for them to live in hiding at the villa, risky, but the alternative was inconceivable.
One night, Irena thinks they have been found out, but the German officer thinks there are rats in the house and orders her to exterminate them. After searching through the basement, the Jewish survivors discover a hidden area and move there. It’s not an easy life, but they’re alive.
A blackmailer threatens to reveal everything, but after reading the note, they hope an altered letter might change the outcome, so Irena takes it to an officer, who then arranges for the blackmailer to be caught and dealt with.
When three of the Jewish women are caught in the house by the officer, Irena makes the personal sacrifice of being his mistress in exchange for their lives.
By the time the Soviets arrive, Irena has helped the Polish Jews escape to the forest to be with the Resistance.
Irena actively made choices after witnessing various horrors of war and the Holocaust. Because of her selfless acts, she saved many Jewish lives.
IRENA’S VOW is an homage to Irena and what she did in her vow to save the lives of Polish Jews, a testament of her faith tested and reaffirmed, courage in the face of evil, and strength to survive in a war-torn world. With the authentic cinematography, you will feel transported to a war-stricken Poland, as the heart wrenching story unfolds.
Stay through the credits to see a montage of updates of those she saved and what happened to her after the war.
IRENA’S VOW, a well-told and honestly depicted story, does not shy from the horrors of WWII and the Holocaust. It shows humanity at its best when faced with the worst, making the choice to do what is right, even when the cost could be one’s own life. This award-winning story of one woman who saved the lives of many should not be missed.
