A few years ago, in mid-December, we had a craving for freshly grilled hamburgers. What do you do when it’s snowing in the middle of winter and you want to grill? For us, we break out the grill and BBQ anyways. Needless to same, I’m excited to kick off our outdoor grilling season, and what better way to start grilling than with Hillshire Farm American Craft Sausage.
During a recent trip to Walmart, I stopped by the deli meats and picked up a few packages of the new Hillshire Farm American Craft Sausage. This new sausage comes in a variety of flavors that could be used in both grilling recipes and sausage recipes. We ended up picking up packages of the Garlic & Onion and Smoky Bourbon Hillshire Farm American Craft Sausage.
This BBQ was the first time we used the outdoor grill this year. Since we’ve moved to a house with an indoor grill, we haven’t needed to brave the Montana winters to enjoy good BBQ. But our outdoor grill has great flavor and the weather has been beautiful, which means it was the perfect time to host a fun BBQ gathering.
To accompany the Hillshire Farm American Craft Sausage, I decided to try grilling up some kale as a side dish. I had some large kale leaves and coated them with olive oil, salt and pepper. I put the kale on the grill whole for about 5 minutes on each side, until the edges of the leaf start to char. The kale ended up kind of crispy and delicious.
I also threw on a pot of baked beans, because baked beans are needed at every BBQ. Then, Gil started grilling the sausage.
I’ve tried sausages that didn’t really have the flavor to be eaten in a bun. Many times, I’ve had to cut up the sausage and “mask” the flavor a little so it wasn’t to peppery or conversely to add flavor because it was lacking. That was not the case for Hillshire Farm American Craft Sausage. These sausages can be enjoyed as-is, in a bun, or with your favorite toppings.
Keeping it simple with just ketchup. Simple and AWESOME.
I started out with the Smoky Bourbon Hillshire Farm American Craft Sausage and LOVED it. There was a great, subtle bourbon flavor that added a nice complexity to the sausage. Next up was the Garlic & Onion sausage which had a little extra sweetness with each bite. I love how Hillshire Farm has been able to make BBQ a little more gourmet without being stuffy.
Add in a few drinks and BAM! – Grilling season has officially kicked off (at least for us).
Cheers!
How will you be kicking off grilling season this year?

I often grill in the winter blizzard too; because everything just tastes better grilled! So jealous of your indoor grill though!
So excited you got a fun BBQ outside! I’m still looking for warm weather. And those Sausages look delicious! Gotta try the grilled kale next! #client
