Many of us grow up with dreams of being a doctor, a lion tamer, or in my case, a secretary (I loved filing – what can I say?) As we grow older, those dreams evolve into more “practical goals,” but in the end, we still want the same thing – to live the American Dream.
According MassMutual’s State of the American Family Study, “Confidence in the American Dream May Be Eroding.” Half the older Millennials surveyed said that they thought the American Dream is “disappearing completely.” And I can understand that sentiment. Some people may think, “How is having to go to an office day-in-and-day-out living a dream?” Or at least I did.

If you had asked me 20 years ago where I pictured myself. It wouldn’t be here, sitting at my desk, writing this post. It wouldn’t be baking something up to “taste test” (baking – ha!) But one way or another, I found myself living an American Dream I hadn’t even considered possible.
This new American Dream also came with new responsibilities – especially financial responsibilities. We manage our money and are being more responsible with finances. Along with forty percent of households surveyed, I feel ““good at managing money.” Millenials aren’t just educating ourselves, we’re also education our children, with over half of Millenials surveyed actively involved with education their children about money.
If you want to learn more about managing money or how MassMutual can help you achieve your American Dream, browse the MassMutual Family Finances Study, which has tools and resources to help you manage your finances and teach your children about money.
Do you believe in the American Dream?
