I received a free digital screening in exchange for my honest Audrey’s Children movie review. All opinions are my own.
AUDREY’S CHILDREN is a major motion picture based on the true story of Dr. Audrey Evans, a pediatric oncologist originally from England, whose research helped to change modern cancer protocol and to increase the childhood cancer survivability rate from 10% to 80%. A biographical drama film from Emblem Entertainment, Amasia Entertainment, Resonate Entertainment, and Blue Harbor Entertainment, it stars Natalie Dormer, Jimmi Simpson, and Clancy Brown. The movie is rated PG.
Audrey’s Children begins in 1969, with Dr. Audrey Evens joining the staff of CHOP (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia). Originally from England, she’s a highly educated female doctor in a male-dominated world, bumping heads with her revolutionary research, sense of style, gentle manner with children, and kindness to all living things. As a child, she had spent a lot of time in a hospital for an undisclosed reason, and it seems to be a force which keeps her motivated to care about children and their families. She was also a woman of faith and that was part of her drive. She was not afraid of doing what she could for the children.
Dr. Audrey has bold ideas and others on staff aren’t always open to her methods. She has a new idea for a medical protocol of cancer staging for neuroblastoma in children. Dr. Dan offers to assist her. As they go through medical files, they organize the cancers by age of the children, results, and several other factors. As they go along, they rearrange things as necessary to figure out what can work while combining two types of targeted chemo drugs.
When she initially can’t get funding for the research, she goes directly to a pharmaceutical company with her new idea and finds success. Her methods do not go over well with her colleagues, but she eventually gains their respect.
Not only does Dr. Audrey care for her patients, she cares about the families, and works toward housing for them at no cost. This leads to the eventual first Ronald McDonald house in 1974, which she co-founded with the Eagles football team and McDonald’s.
She nearly lost her job for using her experimental treatment on a patient, but the tumors were reduced, and her stage system protocol was seen as successful. Her compassion, combined by her drive to find a cure for neuroblastoma, led to the Evans Staging System for Neuroblastoma.
Audrey’s Children is a wonderful tribute to Dr. Audrey Evans, a doctor known as the “Mother of Neuroblastoma.” A world changer in the medical field, Dr. Audrey battled so many odds in the quest to treat neuroblastoma and increase the survivability rate for children with cancer.
It’s a wonderful and inspiring feel-good movie, with a few sad moments, but over all a positive message about Dr. Audrey Evans and how she changed the world by never giving up in the face of adversity.
