Wedding planning: months of fun spent obsessing over flower colors and bridesmaids’ dresses, or hell on earth that leaves you exhausted just in time for your big day? Everyone has their own opinions on it!
If you’re someone who’s getting married in a year or so, you’re going to be in the midst of wedding planning right now. And if that planning is starting to get on top of you, we’d like to try and make it fun again.
Now, while we can immediately say it may not always be fun, we can certainly recommend a few things to make it more enjoyable and less stressful in the long term.
Simplify Your Wants
Breaking things down into bite-sized pieces will make tackling a wedding plan a much more manageable thing. That’s why you should simplify your wants and put them into simple defined categories. You and your partner should do this together, and see where these categories match up.
For example, break down the guest list length into the categories of ‘big’ and ‘small’. Then the both of you can say which one you’d prefer, and if you agree, great! If you don’t, go for the middle option of ‘medium’ and move on to the next thing on your task list.
Set Specific Time Aside for Planning Sessions
It’s going to be so much more difficult to plan your wedding when you’re always pushed for time. You can’t look for a venue when you’ve only got a spare 20 minutes in the middle of the workday! You need at least a good couple hours to narrow down your options, decide your budget, and think about what size and how accessible it’ll need to be.
Rushing leads to stress. The more you step back and go slowly, the easier your wedding prep will start to feel. Take a deep breath, block out some free time, and go from there.
Don’t Do it Alone
Never take on a wedding plan by yourself. Make sure your partner is just as involved as you are, whether or not you’re ‘better’ at planning or they claim to have no interest.
After all, this is where the effort of being married will start to weave into your life. If you’re the only one who can plan the wedding, and your partner doesn’t pitch in unless you ask them to do so, it could very much set an exhausting tone for your life together.
Your wedding is about the both of you! That means you both need to be present to work on tasks like deciding on the menu, the cake, the guest list, the transport, and the venue. You can split these tasks 50/50, but never let just one half of the couple do 90% or more.
Wedding planning can certainly be a lot more fun than you’ve been experiencing it so far! Cut your tasks in half, delegate them out to each other, and always try to take your time.
